By Yukiko Saito, Tokyo, Japan.
We like Yukiko's pieces for its understated beauty and functional brewing considerations. As a potter who practices Chinese Tea Ceremony, she creates pieces that are both easy to use, and reflects the calm spirit and clean aesthetics of the sort of Chinese Tea brewing that we admire!
This pot is fired in the 'Gohonde' method, which involves half the period of firing in reduction condition and half in oxidation conditions. The reduction firing results in the slight pinkish hue. Placement of the pots in the kiln is important to achieve the hue texture, thus Yukiko has to limit the number of pieces fired during the Gohonde process.
This simple shibordashi is perfect for brewing teas that requires lower temperatures and longer steeping times, like green teas and very fresh white or first flush himalayan teas. Yukiko explained this is because the shiboridashi lowers temperature of the water with the wide opening, and also requires slow pouring due to the shape thus prolonging the steeping time. Yukiko has chosen to feature peonies in this series of teaware as she likes the antique beauty of peonies. We agree, because we think the rustic peony carvings adds an impression of passage of time to these teaware pieces!
