Meizi 美子, Tainan, Taiwan
Meizi first fell in love with art, then she met tea. Her real joy is in making teaware with forms and textures that are creative and artistic, and developed the functionality of teaware over time as she accumulated tea-brewing experience.
Meizi's most distinctive pieces are her bright coloured Gaiwans, with playful and bold in their forms and textures in an attempt to revitalise the traditional look of Gaiwans. Her Gaiwan pieces are striking and functional pieces of art, which she uses daily to brew her tea.
This gaiwan has a beautiful painted exterior, which contrasts with the matt golden interior, creating an gaiwan that pretty and opulent at the same time! The unglazed interior and exterior of the gaiwan may stain with tea, so Meizi recommends washing them out once the tea brewing is completed. She enjoys brewing roasted teas with this gaiwan, as she likes the way the unglazed pot softens the harshness of the roasts. Darker teas may stain the gaiwan more easily though, which some brewers may liken the process to the teaware developing its character over time. Lighter oxidized teas are less likely to stain, for those who prefer the gaiwan in its original state.
