Meizi 美子, Tainan, Taiwan
Meizi first fell in love with art, then she met tea. Her real joy is in making teaware with forms and textures that are creative and artistic, and developed the functionality of teaware over time as she accumulated tea-brewing experience.
Meizi's most distinctive pieces are her bright coloured Gaiwans, with playful and bold in their forms and textures in an attempt to revitalise the traditional look of Gaiwans. Her Gaiwan pieces are striking and functional pieces of art, which she uses daily to brew her tea. This particular shade of blue is especially dear to Meizi, as she grew up in inland Chiayi in Taiwan, always yearning for the ocean. Her first encounter with the Pacific Ocean on a school trek on the East Coast of Taiwan was so exhilarating, she had been searching for this right shade of blue!
This gaiwan has a simple textured exterior with grainy blue clay slip and patches of white clay slip to represent clouds. The bright golden interior contrasts beautifully, creating an gaiwan that pretty and opulent at the same time! The glazed interior and exterior of the gaiwan suits the pot to brew all teas, though Meizi prefers brewing lighter oxidized more delicate teas with this gaiwan.
