Buncheong is a traditional Korean style of pottery where white clay slip is applied onto a usually darker clay body. For this piece, the white clay slip is applied after the first (bisque) firing. He creates the beautiful black spots and patches by glazing with iron oxide just before applying the white clay slip. The form of the katakuchi makes handing the ware when pouring hot tea easier, and has a shape that resembles the outline of peaches. As buncheong ware are porous, the colour will change with progressive use, which Mr Hong likens to character development of the teaware!
