Mr Hong warned me that these batch would have a slightly different style, and we loved it! Sleek black and white colours, but still retaining a form which is both rustic and immaculate. This one is 'Saggar-fired' where items are placed in a high temperature resistant ceramic box, where the items undergo more extreme reduction reactions as oxygen is more limited in such conditions. Mr Hong places wood ash and sea shells in these 'Saggar' boxes, which results in a 'wood-fired' quality to the items. Specifically, the white matt glazed lid here has a dreamy tinge of ash, which adds an extra touch to the contrast between the white kid and black body.
This teapot is glazed interiorly. But because of the teapot body is likely to retain more heat, we recommend that this teapot be used for more oxidized oolongs, hongchas (western black teas), heichas (fermented teas) like Liu Bao or a cooked puer, and potentially an aged white.
