When we first chanced upon this Gaiwan, we were taken by the details of the workmanship. Thought not exactly antique as it was produced about a decade ago by Singaporean Peranakan Tableware company Joot, it is made in the traditional style, with thinner porcelain, silver rims on the 'cup' and 'base', and coloured in with gradient shades. It was explained that the old artisans of Jing De Zhen who make such wares for the Straits Chinese in South East Asia are dying out, since this art form is now less in demand. The Phoenix featured heavily in Peranakan wares, and the male counterpart the Dragon is noticeably absent in Peranakan wares, which is a testament to the matriarchal nature of the Peranakan culture.
We use this Gaiwan to brew everything! Porcelain is versatile and suitable for all teas.
