西湖龙井 Xihu Longjing aka West Lake Dragon Well has been adored by loyalty & poets since its conception in Northern Song dynasty. While visiting Longjing farmers in Hangzhou, we asked why Longjing should be considered the best of green teas in China, and the most impressive answer was from a Mr Wei from Mao Jia Pu: that Longjing requires more work, needs to be more dehydrated than most green teas, and the ones made from the traditional cultivar has a distinctive orchid fragrance. This is one of such batch from the local cultivar 群体种, loved for the said delicate that lingers in a subtle orchid aftertaste. The gentleness of the flavour is accentuated by the tea’s high altitude growth on Lion’s Peak at Longjing village, made by Madam Shang and her family. Brew at a lower temperature to coax out gentle notes of umami melon seeds and a lingering floral aftertaste. This is soothing tea that surely deserves a slow moment to savour, not to be drank in haste!
