A katakuchi is traditionally used in Japan for cooling water, though we often used the term for the regular tea servers as well, the shape of this server is indeed suitable for dropping water temperature for those delicate green teas! We love the rugged, aged texture, created by first applying a black glaze after bisque fire, then layering with a watery ultra refined clay slipped of a bright red or orange colour called Terra Sigillata after second firing, then firing for the final third time. The uneven coverage of the Terra sigillata gives this piece a 'worn by the passage of time' character, paired with a simple elegant form and size that is practical for kungfu tea brewing!
