Talking about a green tea that leaves an impression! This tea is actually made from a meticulously fine picking of bud + 2 top leaves like most green teas! The Taiping Houkui 太平猴魁 looks humongous for a green tea, but is in fact from just a ‘middle sized leaf’ tea species 中叶种. Unlike most green teas that favour a Pre-Qingming harvest, Taiping Houkui is harvested slightly more maturely than most green teas - the buds need to grow to a very specific size, but yet cannot be too big. The harvest thus only takes place late April to Mid May. This batch is by the traditional method of placing the leaves between wire mesh and baking them - one can only imagine how labour intensive this process is! This placement between the wire mesh results on its grid marks on the leaves , which we are especially fascinated with! The more mature pluck and baking process brings out its characteristic ‘orchid’ fragrance 兰花香! We think it pretty and functional to brew with a teabowl , not just to admire the leaves but to bring down the brewing temperature! This is a green tea after all, where lower temperatures are recommended!
