Ocean Blue Gaiwan with Rectangular Tray by Yang Hui Ting

Cermaic Artist: Yang Hui Ting (Kaoshiung, Taiwan)

Taiwanese Potter Yang Hui Ting creates beautiful pieces inspired by textures weathered by the passage of time, such as the discoloured surfaces of old painted wood or metal. The effect is achieved by her careful layering of coloured clay slips. Combined with her daily experiences with tea as she works with her potter-tea master husband Feng Jian Zhou, her beautiful pieces are made functional for the modern tea brewer. Her choice of celadon as the internal glaze is to enable the gaiwan to brew all  types of tea neutrally. We also love the confident lines in the shape of her Gaiwans, which is both neat and elegant in its appearance!

This piece is accompanied by a ceramic tray, though simple in its appearance, requires skills and dedication to create. The difficulty is in achieving a flat and even tray, as the hand crafted production method causes the tray to be easily warped.

Exterior unglazed. Textured surface achieved by layering blue clay slip on brown clay slip.

Glazed interiorly.

Fired in a gas and electric kiln at 1230 degree celcius by the oxidation method.
